Minnesota Sports Facilities Authority, Minnesota Vikings and HKS Sports & Entertainment Group Set to Unveil New Multipurpose Stadium

The Minnesota Sports Facilities Authority (MSFA), the Minnesota Vikings and HKS Sports & Entertainment Group, together with city officials and special guests, will celebrate the official ribbon-cutting ceremony Friday, July 22, for U.S. Bank Stadium.

Described as an authentic structure influenced by its Minnesota location, the new stadium exhibits a bold, progressive design that combines efficient functionality with stunning architecture. With a soaring prow, the largest transparent roof in the world and operable doors that open to the downtown skyline, the facility’s openness and sleek geometric exterior makes it unlike any other stadium in the country.

“The design reflects the true story of the Minnesota community with its international style driven by climatic response and energy conservation,” said Bryan Trubey, executive vice president/director of HKS Sports & Entertainment Group. “The interior volume makes it the most versatile multiuse building in the country with the most advanced digital-age technology.”

Owned by the MSFA and managed by SMG, the facility will host Super Bowl LII in 2018, the NCAA Final Four in 2019, and is in the mix for other national and international events. In the first month after opening, the stadium will host a premier international soccer match between Chelsea and AC Milan (Aug. 3), as well as Luke Bryan’s “Kill the Lights” Tour (Aug. 19) and Metallica (Aug. 20).

Design Influences

  • Design is driven by four points of emphasis: climate, geography, history/quality of civic structures and technology.
  • Evokes images of ice flows colliding together on frozen lakes, jagged geology that once defined nearby St. Anthony Falls, and traditional Nordic roof structures designed to shed snow.
  • Authentic design responds to the climate rather than works against it (e.g., slanted roof, snow gutters) and continues the Minneapolis-St. Paul community’s trend toward progressive and modern expression.

Exterior Design Features

  • Stadium’s footprint is more than 1.75 million square feet, nearly twice the size of its predecessor.
  • Reaching 270 feet high at its west peak, the structure slopes down to 205 feet on the east end.
  • Zinc metal panels, which will patina over time and appear various shades based on sun angle, along with 200,000 square feet of glass and glazed curtain walls, make up the exterior facade.
  • Stadium features the only ETFE (ethylene-tetra-fluoro-ethylene) roof on a sports facility in the U.S. ETFE comprises the entire south side of the stadium’s roof and 60 percent of the total roof surface (248,000 square feet). Transparent ETFE is designed to let light in like glass but is lighter, more economical and self-cleaning. Combined with the expansive glass throughout the building, the ETFE roof gives fans the best of both worlds: an outdoor experience in a climate-controlled environment.
  • Signature design feature is the Legacy Gate, made up of five of the world’s largest glass doors that range from 75 to 95 feet tall, and each extends 55 feet across. Doors each weigh 57,000 pounds and contain 10 smaller doors to be used in inclement weather.
  • Five total entry gates — Legacy Gate (west), Polaris Gate (northwest), Ecolab Gate (north), Verizon Gate (east), and Pentair Gate (south) — give fans access points to the city and the stadium on all four sides.
  • Twelve-plus acres total of usable space will be available on Vikings gamedays to enhance the experience for fans.
  • Medtronic Plaza will provide nearly three acres for pregame activities and stadium queuing.
  • Legacy Ship is a 160-foot-long sculptural landmark that will sit as an anchor to Medtronic Plaza.
  • A 2,000-square-foot curved LED video board standing 55 feet tall serves as the ship’s sail and the stadium marquee. Inspired by legendary Viking ships, the Legacy Ship is constructed of contemporary metals, stone, concrete and wood, and features landscaping, theatrical lighting, sounds and smoke effects. More than 14,000 fans purchased personally-engraved commemorative Legacy Bricks, which will make up approximately 3,500 square feet of the ship’s deck. A total of 2,500 premium parking spaces will be available near U.S. Bank Stadium, and, through a mix of public and private lots, more than 32,000 parking spaces are located within a 20-minute walk of the stadium.
  • Fans can utilize the light rail station directly outside U.S. Bank Stadium’s front door; 30 percent of attendees are expected to arrive by train. A 30-foot-wide pedestrian bridge extends from the LRT platform to Medtronic Plaza.
  • U.S. Bank Stadium is connected to Minneapolis’ existing skyway system, which includes more than eight miles of enclosed, climate-controlled walkways connecting the downtown area.

Interior Design Features

  • Stadium capacity is 66,200, expandable to 70,000 for events like Super Bowl LII.
  • Fans will experience Vikings football like never before with both the closest seats to the sideline (first row just 41 feet away) and closest suites (Turf Suites just 25 feet away) in the NFL.
  • Compared to the Metrodome, U.S. Bank stadium will feature double the restrooms (979 fixtures), 360-degree concourses twice as wide (ranging from 32 to 50 feet) and 50 percent more concessions.
  • Other amenities: team stores; historical Vikings and Minnesota sports exhibits; and a high-quality, Minnesota-based art collection.
  • Building will have approximately 8,200 club seats within six different club spaces offering upscale stadium experiences.
  • Six different suite options totaling 131 individual suites range in capacity from 10 to 24 fans.
  • A group space broken into three primary components — group “cabins,” a Lodge Bar and a Truss Bar — and totaling 17,500 square feet accommodates a combined capacity of approximately 900, one-third of which will include fixed seats.
  • Two of the highest-quality and best-positioned LED video boards in the NFL are located in the east and west end zones.
  • U.S. Bank Stadium has 2,000 televisions strategically placed throughout the building in order to keep fans connected to the game at all times.
  • LED lighting system in U.S. Bank Stadium is the first of its kind to be included in a new NFL stadium. LED bowl lighting can adjust color temperature and provide natural and more uniform light, improving the overall clarity of the playing surface for players, as well as fans who are in the stadium or watching on TV. Lights can turn on and off quickly to accommodate unique pregame and halftime entertainment.
  • U.S. Bank Stadium has a collection of hundreds of pieces of art, specifically commissioned from primarily local Minnesota artists.
  • Located on the Upper Club level in the northwest corner of U.S. Bank Stadium, the 10,000-square-foot interactive space gives fans a dynamic experience that includes virtual reality, a radio-frequency identification (RFID) system and team memorabilia.
  • U.S. Bank Stadium has a world-class technology infrastructure that complements the unmatched gameday atmosphere of a Vikings home game and will provide the most social experience in the NFL.
  • The Vikings have invested in technology that enables deeper engagement with fans throughout the entire gameday experience — whether they are at home, en route to the stadium, entering/navigating the building or in their seats.
  • Stadium’s Wi-Fi built by CenturyLink is capable of accommodating every fan inside the stadium, as well as staff members, vendors, etc. The Vikings expect approximately 30,000 fans will hop on Wi-Fi at a Vikings regular-season game, but burstable bandwidth will be able to accommodate expanded capacities (e.g., 70,000 at Super Bowl LII).

Sustainability/LEED Certification

  • Stadium design is optimized to be environmentally friendly and energy-efficient while still being cost-effective.
  • Stadium will receive Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification.
  • Green initiatives include: shape and form of roof (ability to shed snow), ETFE material (energy-efficient, cost-effective and recyclable), stormwater management, public transportation, etc.
  • One ridge beam instead of two or more primary trusses allows one of the lightest hard-roof structures for a major stadium in a climate that would typically deal with the heaviest snow-load requirements.
  • Approximately 90 percent of the Metrodome’s demolition materials and construction waste will be recycled and used in other projects.
  • U.S. Bank Stadium is the first NFL stadium to open with LED lighting, consuming 75 percent less energy compared to a traditional metal halide.
